CHAPTER 18

ADA

Ada spends a sleepless night, worrying that her car ride to DC with Casey will be awkward. But before they exit the town limits, Casey is chattering about her new condo and budding romance with Luke as though they are old friends.

Casey twirls a strand of her golden hair around her finger. “Luke is older than me, and he’s ready for a more serious relationship. But I’ve had so many changes in my life this past year, I’d like to take things a little slower.”

Ada gives her a knowing nod. “I felt that way, too, when Enzo and I first got engaged. We hadn’t been together long, and I thought we were rushing things. Now I can’t wait to be his wife and start our life together.”

Casey drops her smile. “Daniel’s diagnosis is a lesson for us all to live each day to the fullest. I can’t believe he’s dying. It seems so surreal.”

“I haven’t fully wrapped my mind around it yet,” Ada says as she merges onto the highway. “Losing your biological father when you’re just getting to know him must be difficult for you.”

“Not as difficult as it must be for you when he’s been your father all your life.”

Ada tightens her grip on the steering wheel. “My feelings for Daniel have been all over the place these past few months. I would have eventually forgiven him for the way he treated me. But now that I’m having to speed up the process, to force that forgiveness, my emotions are even more conflicted. I’m trying to put the hurt feelings aside. Some days are easier than others.”

“I can’t even imagine.” Casey rummages through her bag for her sunglasses, cleaning them with the hem of her blouse before putting them on. “Daniel is thrilled to be hosting your dream wedding. His face lights up every time he talks about it.”

“All little girls dream of fairy-tale weddings, Casey. Few rarely come true. Enzo wanted to elope, and I was coming around to the idea.” A faraway look shines in her eyes. “I can see the two of us alone with our celebrant on the end of a long pier, surrounded by blue sky and turquoise water.”

Casey smiles her approval. “That sounds heavenly. And so personal. Can you plan a tropical vacation for your honeymoon?”

“Unfortunately, the tropics will have to wait. We had a realistic discussion about our honeymoon last night. We’re closing on our new house in mid-October. The painters will be working the two weeks before the wedding. As of now, we’ll spend our wedding night at the Inn at Hope Springs, and then return to Lovely on Sunday to move.”

“So not the dream wedding or dream honeymoon, but the dream house.”

Ada laughs. “Exactly.”

Casey removes a file from her work tote. “Since we have plenty of time on our hands, we might as well work on the wedding plans.”

Ada’s brow shoots up above her sunglass frames. “Isn’t that Sonia’s job? I’ve scheduled a meeting with her for Friday.”

“My department is helping Sonia until we hire an assistant.
